This pictures shows the various stages of textile production. I took this shot in Jaipur, on a sunny February day. The weather in Rajasthan being so good, it is not a surprise that many of the artisans work outside. From left to right: Picture showing how the raw material is dyed into a vat. No machinery ... everything done by hand, like most things in India. The heat necessary to bind the colors into the material is just a fire started with wood and charcoal. Bottom pictures from left to right: Material awaiting to be "stonewashed"... a method using actual stones that are placed inside a large tumbler, and that stress the material, giving it a rough and uneven look that is very desireable. The right bottom photo shows a man busy with woodblock printing with vegetal inks.
